2009 Awards: The Winners

Oh yes it is! - for the Hartlepool Mail

The Hartlepool Mail collected a clutch of golden eggs when the prizes of the 2009 Cordner Awards were handed out in pantoland.

Sturdy newsman Paul Watson emerged from the enchanted castle wearing the North East Journalist of the Year crown and carrying the trophy for Hard News, when the 28th Cordner presentations were made on the stage of the Customs House Theatre, South Shields, with its scenery for next week’s Sleeping Beauty Christmas show.  See more.

And his bold dragon-slaying associate Keith McCaffery was granted the twin Splash Subbing trophies for his dramatic handling of big page 1 news beasts.

Editor/Fairy Godmother Joy Yates, who collected McCaffery’s prizes, said she was delighted with her team’s success and led the applause for her victorious duo.

It was a good night too for ncjMedia titles in Newcastle, with writing and design prizes, including young Rod Pattinson who returned with the shimmering Tom Cordner Quill as Trainee Journalist of the Year, Babette Decker - again with the golden Spike of Design, and word-wizard David Whetstone for Features. And for the Hexham Courant’s valiant Brian Tilley as Weekly Journalist of the Year, for the Press Association’s Owen Humphreys who won both photographic awards, for Dave Robson, of the Evening Gazette who was Columnist of the Year, and Business Quarter as Top Magazine.

Gavin Havery of the Northern Echo won the first Cordner trophy for Online Video News coverage and his colleague Barry Nelson collected the Health prize for the third year on a row. And their stable-mate James Entwistle at the Darlington & Stockton Times earned the magic lamp award for journalistic potential in getting the top NCE exam marks in the region.

Two giants of North East journalism were honoured – John Gibson of the Evening Chronicle won the Sport prize, and Clive Crickmer, former Daily Mirror man in the North East and doyen of the national papers’ corps in the region for many years, received the Graeme Stanton Trophy for a lifetime contribution to journalism,

Ray Spencer, the theatre’s director and seasoned writer and performer, was a quick-witted host who pulled off the trick of complimenting regional journalists and sending them up at the same time.
